Created through a collaboration between composer Wonwoori and deaf dancer Ko Ah-ra, <96 BPM> was born from a journey where two individuals with different auditory worlds explore the true essence of music.
Composer Wonwoori, who has long researched and integrated the characteristics of music perception by the hearing-impaired into his work, realized through a cognitive dialogue with dancer Ko Ah-ra that one’s level of auditory perception does not dictate the depth of their musical enjoyment. Instead, he focuses on the potential for new musical expressions that can be conveyed through an individual's unique musical senses.
Wonwoori suggests that if the process and result of composition were to be extremely abstracted, its essence would be [Tension and Relaxation]. This cycle of tension and relaxation persists throughout a lifetime through the human breath—the relationship between inhalation and exhalation. The composer proposed "composing" a sequence of movements by expressing Ko Ah-ra's unique musical world through this very relationship of [Inhale and Exhale].
When the essence of music—tension and relaxation—meets movement, Ko Ah-ra’s auditory world transforms into a unique message of melody and rhythm, becoming a musical dialogue. Through the sound of the dancer’s breath and the repetition of inhaling and exhaling, the work conveys a hope and determination that breath, the source of life, can become music for everyone. Furthermore, it prompts the audience to reflect on the unique music inherent within themselves.
<96 BPM> is an excerpt from the final scene of the documentary film On the Wings of a Butterfly (Directed by Hyon Jin-sik). It was screened at the 2024 DMZ International Documentary Film Festival and has been adapted into an exhibition format to be presented at the opening exhibition of MODU ART SPACE.
